Farouk De Cheneau, who benefited from a change of scenery when winning first time out for Dorset trainer Anthony Honeyball at Fontwell Park, doubled his tally when landing the Class 3 Get Daily Tips On attheraces.com Handicap Chase, feature race of Newton Abbot’s popular Ladies Day.
Stormin Crossgales set out to make the running, but was giving ground away when jumping to his right, whereas Farouk De Cheneau was straight and true in second place. He took the lead before the third-last fence and, although Fat Sam threw down a challenge over the final two jumps, Sam Twiston-Davies drove Farouk De Cheneau out to win with Kauto The King, bidding to win the race for the second year running, back in third.
There was early drama in the opening Janet Denning Fifehead Farms Memorial Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle when leader Professor Calculus fell at the third flight, bringing down Pepsiwithacap. This left Afta Party, who had been backed from 14/1 to 10/1, in the lead but, as the runners faced up to the final flight, it was joint-favourite Enthused who had taken over, pressed by Clearance.
Jockey Zac Baker had just managed to steer Clearance the right side of the running rail when short of room as the runners turned out of the back straight but, once over the final obstacle, the pair asserted on the run-in to give Trowbridge trainer Michael Blake his second winner of the season.
Only two of the six runners in the Happy Birthday Trixie Let’s Get Tipsy Juvenile Maiden Hurdle had jumped a hurdle in public before and they had met at Hexham last month when Max Of Stars finished second and Uncle Matthew fourth. Punters made Max Of Stars favourite to go one better here with newcomer Waitara, twice a winner on the flat in France on soft ground, second best.
Trained by Ollie Pears at Norton in Yorkshire, Max Of Stars had failed to win in four starts on the flat, but made the long journey worthwhile when leading from start to finish to beat Vitani by 68 lengths and bring up a 24th success of the season for champion jockey Brian Hughes, celebrating a birthday winner on his only mount of the meeting.
Sassified, third to Vin Rouge here two weeks ago, was sent off the 3/1 joint favourite for the EBCS Leisure Giddy Up Novices’ Handicap Hurdle and, in the hands of Micheal Nolan, justified punters’ faith when leading over the penultimate flight and comfortably holding off Escobedo.
Nickelsonthedime and Premier D’troice, separated by a neck at Warwick at the end of May, headed the market for the Racing Partnership TRP Handicap Hurdle over an extended three and a quarter miles. They were to finish in that order again but, this time, playing for places behind 11/1 shot Name In Lights, reverting to hurdles after four unsuccessful runs over fences, who was another to lead at the second-last flight and have enough in hand at the line.
Songo, having his first run over hurdles for 797 days, was the one for money in the Class 3 Strategic Solutions Chartered Financial Planners Novices’ Hurdle and he duly obliged, easily beating Bala Brook, who was runner-up for the second race running, and dual point-to-point winner Frankie Faulkner.
Junior Massini, a winner at Warwick and Bangor-on-Dee this season, overcame a 4lb rise in the weights to complete a hat-trick in the closing St Austell Brewery Novices’ Handicap Chase.
