Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work at a racecourse? We asked some of the familiar faces you see around the racecourse to share with us a bit about their role at the course and their top tips for those coming to enjoy a day at the races at Newton Abbot Racecourse. Here’s what they had to say.
First up we hear from our Conference & Events Manager, Sylvia Fairchild:
Job title / responsibilities: Conference and Events Manager. I’m responsible for booking and coordinating all non-raceday events, payroll, organising and running Antique Fairs and coordinating winners / presentations. The office Rottweiler!
How long have you worked at the racecourse: 26 years in total since 1988 but I’ve been employed by the racecourse for 13 years.
What’s the best part of your job: I simply enjoy all aspects of my job; there are too many great things to narrow it down to one thing unfortunately.
What advice would you give to those considering coming racing for the first time: Purchase Paddock Enclosure tickets so you can access all areas and just enjoy the full racing experience. But remember to always bet sensibly!
What makes a day at Newton Abbot Racecourse better than anywhere else: It’s good value for families with children aged 16 and under with our free entry and free children’s amusements during the holiday period. A day at Newton Abbot is the perfect day out for families. Nothing beats a day at the races!
